Strangely none of the other backs scored tries but coach Dave Stubbs was more than happy. He said: “We told them to get the ball wide and once they cottoned on we never looked back.”
But it didn’t start that way. Playing with the slope the home side took the game to West in the early stages and should have scored on six minutes when fly half Tom Smith was in space in the West 22. But he knocked on with the line at his mercy.
That spurred West into action. The forwards set up a driving maul on the right and were heading for the try line, but skipper Davy Tighe opted to spin the ball out to fly half Paul Moss who kicked high for winger Weegram to take the ball in his stride. Danny was tackled but the excellent Greg Edwards picked up the pieces to take on the defence and then feed Weegram who went over in the corner.
Sandal came back and looked to be in with a chance from a driving maul only for Henry Tones to smuggle the ball and clear the danger.
Sandal finally got some points for their pressure on 17 minutes when London referee Sean Kauffman penalised Jonny Boatman at the ruck. Smith easily converted the penalty from in front of the posts.
With a quarter of the game gone, and only two points behind, the reports of Sandal’s playing crisis were becoming to look extremely exaggerated.
It stayed that way until the 35th minute when Lambert got the first of his tries. From a scrum 40 metres out Davy Tighe sent Darren Thomas away on the blind side. He fed Lambert who left winger Simon Frewin and full back Rob Thorn for dead to race in under the posts and provide an easy conversion for Paul Moss.
On the stroke of half time Moss slotted an easy penalty to give West a 15-3 lead.
It was a much closer half-time scoreline than most would have predicted but West wasted no time in putting things right in the second half.
Lambert went over in the corner just three minutes into the half after superb passing by the backs and a slick final ball from Thomas. Two minutes later the Boatman brothers combined in a sweeping 60 metre gallop which saw Jonny Boatman cross the line.
The next try came from even further out. Darren Thomas took a high ball in his own 22 and ran it back at Sandal. He sent Jon Boatman away and he set Lambert loose and when he was held up prop Anth Carr was in support to collect and race in unopposed from 20 metres.
Sandal were now losing 32-3 and they went further behind just minutes later when Lambert got his hat trick, once again going over in the corner after unselfish work by his fellow backs.
Paul Rudd and his fellow forwards then decided to get in on the act. Rudd skipped over from 15 metres in the 63rd minute. Just two minutes later he was back again this time taking a ball on the half way line and leaving the defence for dead as he raced through a gap.
Danny Weegram was also back on the score sheet with ten minutes to go when he took a superb crossfield kick from Paul Moss and outstripped the cover.
Sandal had never given up and got their consolation with three minutes left on the clock when Tom Smith went over in the corner,.
But there was time for one West score. Replacement prop Mark Cholmondeley popped up at inside centre in his own 22 and sent Dan Boatman sprinting downfield. He timed his pass to perfection and Lambert completed his quartet of tries.
