In typical CaNDY tradition both sides agreed on unlimited subs. That allowed some 60 lads to get  the chance for a run-out in front of a vocal support - enhanced by an early start to the day's refreshments by a big contingent of West first teamers. Sorry Ref.

The Stags wore the club's pink Ladies Day Breast Cancer Charity strip, so as not to clash with Berwick's dark strip, and got off to a strong early start with Alex Barker from close range and Zac Southern converting.

Unfortunately, the afternoon was marred by a number of injuries with Mark Lund an early victim  as he broke his collar bone, and had to be whisked off to hospital by Jess Caswell. Mark had driven up specially from a family weeked in Bedale -  we wish him a speedy recovery.

Ben Briggs also suffered an early shoulder injury which stopped his recent try scoring heroics in its tracks.

It took the Bears some time to get going. Once they did get in the Stags' half they capitalised and showed that they had some useful backs. They took a 14-7 lead which was pegged back by a strong surge from Jack Angus before Rob Thorn got in the act. He ran great lines to score twice in five minutes to give his side a 26-14 lead at the break.

The Bears brought it back to 26-21 from the restart.  However, the Stags had brought on quite a few of the cohort from this season's Academy and it was Matty Baggs who finished off smartly in the corner to provide a 10 point lead.

The Bears weren't prepared to give up and it was their lively  scrum half who scored the try of the afternoon to get them back in the game. He set off on a mazy run from his own half which took him to the right touchline before he veered back to go in under that posts.

On the next attack Rob Thorn was sin-binned fo a high tackle on the 22, and from the tap the Berwick left winger was able to go in to give his side the lead with five minutes left on the clock.

The Stags attacked and should have scored when Danny Quinn put a penalty into the corner. The catch and drive looked all the way as though it would lead to a touchdown, instead the ball came out of the back. It was seized on by a Stags player who dived for the line and it looked like the situation had been rescued. However, the Ref was unable to see a touchdown and gave the Bears a goal-line drop out.

That was it. Well done to the Bears who ran the ball at ever opportunity and to both teams for serving up some excellent entertainment.

It's not quite the end of things. The revamped Pyman Cup will be held at Seaton next Saturday.
