There were two contrasting styles of play on show. The home side were enterprising - running the ball at every opportunity while the West pack dominated the scrum.
It made for helter skelter rugby at times with the blustery wind, blowing diagonally across the pitch, proving a major factor with the kickers only managing three successful kicks between them.
West made a great start after Medicals set off at a rate of knots - only to give Sam Heron a chance to intercept on his 22. His gallop took him to the opposing 22, and with Will Hilditch in support West got the first score on the board with Sam's conversion just wide.
The lead lasted only five minutes with the Medicals' backs switching play from right to left to expose a gap in the West defence. The conversion looked nailed on but was also missed.
Back came the West pack with an assault on the home line forcing several penalties, which skipper Ryan Painter opted to tap and go. Matt Siddle was almost in but the ball went to ground and Medicals cleared the danger.
The home side took the lead on 20 minutes after West were penalised for a high tackle. The resulting line-out ball was won by Scott Butcher, but as he broke from the back of the line, the ball was ripped with Medicals going in under the posts for a converted try.
They were back under the posts eight minutes later after missed tackles in midfield gave them an easy run in.
At 19-5 the next score was an important one and with Alex Barker and Adam Hutchinson (pictured) covering lots of ground in the loose it went West's way. It was Barker who was unstoppable from close range with Sam once again just wide.
The next five minutes saw a number of attempts by the West forwards to get over the line. Aidan Jackson-Smith timed one run perfectly to take a pass at speed just five metres out - not for the first time the pass was fired at him and he couldn't hold onto the ball.
Once again a patient Medicals worked their way our of danger seizing another opportunity with a speedy burst up the left wing, which saw an inside ball flatfoot the West defence to give the home side a 24-10 lead.
It lasted only a minute. From the kick off the West forwards once again had their opponents in trouble and from a scrum close to the home line Ryan Painter fed Max Tennant on the short side, The winger going over in the corner to take the score to 24-15 at the break.
The lead was cut to just two points early in the second half. Medicals had a scrum in their own 22 but were pushed off their ball with Scott Butcher - at No 8. in place of the unavailable Chris Atkins and Andy Turner - seizing on the chance to score one of his trademark tries. He went in close enough to the posts to guarantee the conversion.
Anybody's game at this stage as the score suggests. It was Medicals who took their chance with a solo 50 metre burst down the left touchline after more missed tackles. Again too far out for a conversion.
With 25 minutes left that proved to be Medicals' last score. West plugged away with more close range efforts from the forwards coming to nought. However, the best chance came when the backs worked some space on the left creating a two man overlap - unfortunately Sam Heron's pass to Max Tennant went straight in touch earning a loud cry of relief from home supporters.
However, skipper Painter was not to be thwarted. Another scrum in the Medicals' 22 had them going backwards with Painter stepping out to receive from Butcher and powering his way over .
The conversion attempt to level the scores was half way between the posts and the corner but straight into the wind and sadly was just wide.
West's games usually end in a last ditch try followed by the final whistle. This time it didn't happen despite the best efforts of both sides.
The two points drops us to seventh place some 12 points behind fourth placed Stockton, who did their promotion chances a power of good with a home win over Westoe.
