Westoe 37 West 22

Westoe 37 West 22
We headed up the A19 with a changed side from the one that had beaten Northern the week before - but not all change is bad with promising league debuts from Will Corbett, Ollie Webster and Fin Ridley who made their presence felt at a place that isn’t the easiest to do so.

Parking difficulties led to the scribe missing West first try - I’m sure Ryan will tell me it was the try of the season.

By the 14th minute Westoe had scored 2 tries, their bigger forwards capitalising on Wests handling errors.

The next ten minutes saw Both sides pressuring forcing the other to defend hard - with try saving tackles being put in, Ollie Mossop is forced to limp off to be replaced by Zac Southern.

With 15 minutes to go Ryan picks up from the ruck and offloads to Tom Robertson who has a storming run towards the line - this was followed by five minutes of pressure on the Westoe Line - we went down the blindside, we went through the middle, we went down the open but the Westoe defence held firm - if only we’d gone wide. - but it’s easy for us on the sidelines!

Westoe had one more attack but thanks to the West defence we made it to half time 14-5

The second half was a story of penalties with Westoe extending their lead to 17-5

Shortly after we moved up the field and secured a line out in an attacking position  but we were unable to convert it.

Westoe moved the ball down the pitch only for a  loose ball to be picked up by Sam Heron who sprinted up the Westoe Bank but didn’t have the legs to make it to the line - the ball was offloaded to Will Hilditch and then to the forwards only For Westoe to turn the ball over.

They capitalised on handling errors scoring a try from a penalty but were unable to convert it. Isaac Robinson was injured in the defence to be replaced by Ollie Webster.

Shortly after we reduced the gap after a strong run from Sam put Will Hilditch in in the corner. - Sam adding the extras.

Sam added to the scoreboard  shortly after with a penalty in front of the posts. Only for Westoe reply.
Westhorp break westoe
With the score at 22-15 and time running out Ryan ran from our own 22 and with a trademark chip over the head of the defender passed the ball to Owen who was able to out run the Westoe defence to score - Sam again converted.

With the score now 25-22 the visitors  felt that the win was possible but Westoe scored 2 tries in succession to take the score to 37-22

Men of the Match were Tom Robertson, who never stopped all game & Ollie Connolly, for his try saving tackles.

The defeat has put us 7th in the table but as is the nature of the league there’s only 5 points between 2nd and 7th.

We’ve got Stockton at home next Saturday who come to Brinkburn on the back of a 20-65 defeat against league leaders Percy Park - it should be a great game.
