A one minute silence was held before the kick off to remember club members who had sadly passed away since our last league game : Geoff and Corinne Hainsworth, Joe and Anne Huntley, Albert Robertson, Neil Darley and Paul Linighan ______________________________________ |
Browny had a great day carrying. He set up the first try after just five minutes breaking into the opposition half and opening up space for Lewis Scott to continue his record of scoring in every game, so far.
Connolly was the try-maker ten minutes later - darting through the defence and giving Isaac Robinson an easy score converted by Zac Southern.
Ryan Painter was also in lively form. His shrewd chip kick was well anticipated by Will Hilditch who won the chase to touch down to give us a 17-0 lead before the visitors had been into our 22.
However, when they did get some territory, we were pinned in our 22 thanks to a succession of penalties. That saw Alex Barker sent to the bin and Peterlee and Horden took advantage forcing a try outwide to make it 17-5 at the break.
The second half began slowly, to put it politely, until Owen Westhorp stepped off his wing to put in a powerful sidestepping finish with Zac converting.
That score took us into the comfort zone and, as the visitors tired, Jake Linghan forced his way over despite three defenders hanging on to him to set up an easy conversion.
A few more penalties against us allowed "The Leds" to force their way up the left wing eventually using their power to drive over to take the score to 31-12.
But once again it was Adam Brown who was on hand to take a pass from Ryan Painter. He made good ground up the right wing to send in Owen Westhorp (pictured) for his second try - the final one of the day.
There will be harder games to come. Peterlee and Horden arrived having had to cry off the second team game against our Stags, and had some hasty reshuffles to make up the 18 on the day. The won't have enjoyed the unaccustomed sight of seeing their pack shunted around the park.
Fortunately, the Stags managed to get involved in a three cornered contest with BBOB and Stockton at the Old Friarage returning to join in the Ladies Day fund raising activities and rejoicing in the after-match pie at The Cosmopolitan. Rugby has truly returned.
