THE EMPIRE STRIKES AGAIN!!!
On a sodden quagmire in the lower Brinkburn Quadrant the Ginger Rebel squadron had assembled to do battle with the dark forces of the Stasher de Stelle strengthened by the young padawans of Mills, Parker and Procter Jnr. The Gingers kicked off proceedings with the driving wind, rain and slope in their favour but it was the Stashers that dominated the early skirmishes. It was the effervescent Baggs pulling all the strings in the 10 berth causing panic and consternation in the Ginger’s defence every time he touched the ball and with the balanced back row trio of Cameron, McNeil and Mills dominating in the loose it was only a matter of time before the Gingers try line was infiltrated. From a Stasher scrum deep in Ginger territory Cameron made the first incision, Baggs again carried well down the blind side drawing in the Ginger defenders and making space for the Ewok-like Cheshire to dart over from close distance. From the resultant re-start a huge blow was felt in the the Dark-side of the Force when the ageless Mixie Parker had to withdraw from the conflict after an illegal altercation with Sawyer. However the Stasher’s put this drawback behind them and tries from Mills and Cameron put them in a dominant position. It was at this point that the Gingers used their Jedi powers to manipulate referee Sutherland and for the remainder of the game disengaged his left arm so only penalties, scrums and line-outs were given the Gingers way! This resulted in the Gingers amassing four tries within the next 15 mins of play without any response from the Stashers but with only seconds of the first half remaining the elusive Todd managed to capitalise on good work from the Stashers forwards to crash over the Gingers try line and level the scores.
The second half started in the same vein as the first with the Stashers governing matters and it was the now slimline Baggs (after suffering from a bout of travel sickness during the break after making so many yards in the first half!) piercing the Gingers defence once again and then steamrolled over the lacklustre Dixon to make it over the try line. A re-jig in the Stashers backline saw Cameron move from the 8 slot into his more customary role of scrum half and like a white Will Genia started to dictate affairs. A rare forage into the Stasher half for the Gingers half way through the second half saw Quinn finish off an impressive bout of Ginger pressure to bring the try count level at 5 all. But this was to be the climax of the Ginger insurgence and the evil powers of the Stasher dark-side dominated the remainder of the game. Mills scored his second try from 40 yards out, Todd also crossed to bring the score to 7 tries to 5 but the piece-de-resistance was left till last when Ginger Tighe gifted Baggs the opportunity to intercept a wayward pass and sprint a full 60 yards without a Ginger laying a finger on him but with the line at his mercy he unselfishly offloaded to Mills for the big back-rower to claim his hat-trick try and a authoritative victory for the Stashers.
