It is with great sadness that we've learned of the death of club stalwart Margaret Peacock who was known to many, many players as the hard working lady preparing their after match meals ...

Les Peacock says his mother passed away last Saturday: " She was a big supporter of the Club in her time, especially throughout the 80's, and helped out with the meals after the match for a good few years.

"All was peaceful and her WHRFC scarf will have place of honour on her coffin at the funeral next Wednesday at Stranton Crematorium at 12.30."

The club's sincere condolences go to Les and his family.

Deepest sympathy to the Peacock Family.

I had seen the Mail report and it raised a smile for me when they mentioned the original Gillen's girls, that brought memories of my teens flooding back of Margaret - she was a 'card', a real one off.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes, they broke the mould when they made her. So many memories but perhaps one of the funniest was watching Mam trying to assault Gosforth & England lock forward Steve Bainbridge with her umbrella in front of a full house at Brierton Lane after he had "accidentally" stood on my head !! 5'4" Hartlepool Mum v 6'10" International Lock - only one winner ! Sleep well Mam - see you in dreamland - Les.

Thanks & best regards to all of our friends & former WHRFC compatriots in the southern hemisphere. Another one of mam's umbrella incidents came to mind today. After dad had passed away we decided to have a regular family vacation to Scotland, coinciding with mam's birthday and wedding anniversary. Dad was of course a very proud Scotsman and was actually born not a mile away, in Paisley, from that other great Scot, Sir William Wallace. One time however on our way north to the lovely Isle of Skye, we somehow got diverted through the centre of Glasgow and ended up stuck in traffic outside Park Head Stadium, now known as Celtic Park. Mam used to travel in the back seat along with her beloved Grandson Adam who was only a wee lad at this time. Only problem was that we found ourselves surrounded by boards of drunken Celtic supporters as we had picked the day of The Old Firm game to travel north. Imagine the scene then when one of the drunks, still clutching his can of Tennant's Super Strength Lager tried to get into the back of the car for a quick kiss with mam, herself & Dad lifelong Glasgow Rangers fans!!! Once again the trusty umbrella was used to defend her family from attack !!! Priceless !!!
