Following this week's game Chester's skipper will propose a toast to Reg's memory. A gesture for which everyone at West will be most appreciative.
The game itself also promises to be a fitting tribute. Although we've only had one league game you could argue that it sees the two "form" sides of National Three North going head to head.
Chester got a bonus point win at much fancied Rossendale while we put seven tries passed another difficult side in Birkenhead Park.
This year our new coaches will be content to finish better than last season's sixth place, but to their credit Chester are one of the few clubs to openly admit they really do want promotion. Harrogate are possibly the only other.
The Hare Lane club have strengthened during the summer with the return of Tom Foden – brother of Ben. The full back has been playing championship rugby for Birmingham and Rotherham Titans. Fly half Rhys Hayes is also back after missing last season with injury.
We make one enforced change in the pack where Ross Wood returns in place of Anth Carr who has work commitments.
In the backs it’s a straight swap at scrum half where Ryan Painter has failed to recover from last week’s knock so Andrew Foreman continues where he left off last week.
Tom Armstrong also continues on the wing with Zac Southern coming in on the bench.
The most impressive part of last week’s win was the way the new boys came in and shone. Andrew Rollins had a fine game at hooker, and could have scored if he hadn’t been so keen to get away a final pass. He was very much involved in three of the tries and can only get better as he becomes accustomed to National League rugby.
David Heckles also could have scored which would have capped an almost immaculate performance at full-back.
There wasn’t a bad performance by any of the 18 who had plenty of game time thanks to the new replacement rules. It bodes well for home games this season but now we need to start putting in similar performances away.
