But it was the performance of the whole team, and specially that of the younger players, which gives much hope for the rest of the season.

Both sides were missing six or seven regular first teamers but there's no doubt that the West coaches were much the happier at 4.30.

Players have been saying that it has been a good pre-season and the work put in by coaches Tim Sawyer, Kevan Oliphant and former West back Stuart Hardy [now at Yarm School]was obvious.

Handling throughout was superb, tackling sharper and there was much better support play in every phase.

We began with Coates, Bailey and Greenwell in the front row, Michael Hogan and Chocky Davies in the second and the Boatmans and Paul Rudd in the back row. This was the youngest pack we've fielded for some time, but it had Morley rocking and there was plenty of pace and support in broken play.

Michael Hogan and Adam Coates deserve special mention. Hogan has lost six stones since January and is now looking like achieving his potential, while Coates has put in a tremendous amont of work during the summer. He even chased down a Morley centre who had attempted to go round the prop.

The Foremans made an undoubted difference, showing enterprise whenever they got the ball, finishing with style, and bringing the back row into play.

The ball was sped wide with some confidence where wingers Adam Larkin and Scott Butcher looked full of running -the latter getting a fine try to round off the scoring.

Gareth Foreman had opened the scoring after five minutes racing through a gap in the stretched Morley defence.

Dan Boatman got the second try of the afternoon as we raced into a 14-0 lead but Morley came back to level the scores through No 8 Craig Field.

Andrew Foreman forced his way over just before the break, repeating the trick immediately on the restart. He completed his hat trick in double quick time by again using his strength after pressure on the line. Zac Southern, playing at full back, managed four out of the six conversions in some style.

You should never read too much into the first friendly of the season but one thing is for sure - there will be a lot of welcome competition for places this season.
