To say that Morley had things all their own way would certainly not reflect the game or do justice to a West side decimated by injuries and withdrawals in the pack, the starting 8 featuring 5 changes from last weeks starters. Already forced into 4 changes West lost Andrew Davies an hour before the game and also had to reshuffle the bench with Darren Thomas injuring ankle in the warm-up. This brought Phil Henderson into the starting line-up and saw Paul Oliver and Mark Pearce promoted from the Bucks squad to the bench. Despite the disruption to preparation and all the re-shuffling we appeared to get the perfect start when only 2 minutes into the game a quick tap penalty from Davy Tighe released Gareth Kerr up the right-wing and after recycling the ball through a couple of phases it was moved to the left where Scott Butcher finished in the corner. Or so it seemed. Nobody had noticed the touch-judges flag up way back on half-way and play had to be brought all the way back. When Will Nutbeen crossed for a Morley try minutes later it only compounded the frustration of missing out on that opening try, but that frustration soon subsided a little when another tap penalty from Tighe this time released full-back Stu Waites and he timed his pass perfectly to Kerr who out-paced the last defender to touch-down. Moss added the conversion to tie the scores at 7. Morley's Danny Chamberlain was despatched to the sin-bin for foul play and West took the game to the visitors with two old faces Henry Tones and Phil Henderson to the fore, the former showing his usual tenacity at the breakdown. The visiting defence was solid though and held out until Chamberlain returned and it took only minutes for him to get back into the action. Moss spilled a pass only metres from the home line and the second-row was there to complete the easiest of scores. To make matters worse Tom Dixon limped from the field, bringing replacement prop John Greenwell on and forcing Stephen Stockdale into emergency cover in the second-row. Morley extended their lead only 6 minutes later albeit in slightly controversial circumstances. Butcher attempted to field a bouncing ball on his own 22 but having tapped the ball backwards was tackled off the ball and the visitors picked up for another easy try. Referee Colin Burrell waved away West's protests and another missed conversion left the half-time score 17-7. Clearly feeling a bit unlucky to be down by 10 points it was clear that we would need to score first in the second half to have any hope of coming back into the game and when Nutbeen got his second score of the game 10 minutes into the half the writing appeared to be on the wall. Any lingering doubt over the outcome was removed on the hour when, with West pressing deep in the 22 Tighe went close from yet another tap penalty and despite appeals for the tacklers not being 10 metres the penalty went to Morley and, spotting an opportunity, they tapped from their own line and moved the ball through numerous hands before Karl Bradshaw finished off an excellent length-of-the-field try. It was a hammer blow and took any remaining wind from the West sails. With fatigue clearly setting in Michael Ash added Morley's sixth try on 64 minutes before replacement Peter Dadswell charged down a kick from Waites to complete the scoring on 70 minutes. Thankfully for West they managed to hold on in the closing stages and a slightly early final whistle was welcomed by both sides, for Morley to cue their celebrations and for West to wearily reflect on a difficult afternoon and a forgettable season.
