We dominated the first twenty five minutes but failed to get any points on the board. Once Stockport found a way round on the wing they grew in confidence and ran in four.
The heavy rain began right on kick off and after just five minutes Tim Sawyer limped off to be replaced by Anthony Cameron at No 8.
The former Tech player went on to have a fine game and our early momentum wasn’t affected in any way as we battled up the slope and into the wind to pressure the home side.
The forwards picked and drove with the back row of Adam Howard, Dan Boatman and Cameron taking the game to the high flyers with Luke Watson, making his first start at scrum half for the club, driving the pack on in fine style.
So it was a bitter blow when Stockport full back Steve Pearson went in at the corner on 28 minutes. The superb conversion from the touchline by fly half Matt Bebbington was another bitter blow for the hard working West pack.
It got even worse on 36 minutes when Pearson got his second in the corner and Bebbington stepped up again to slot a superb conversion.
The game was effectively sealed just before the break with another copy cat try and conversion. This time centre Tom Kelly being the man to go over in the corner.
We turned round 21-0 down, despite all of our possession, but soon lost centre Andrew Cheslin to injury with Harry Readhead coming on.
Andrew Dixon was then yellow carded by 25 year old referee Richard Harding - who’d driven five and a half hours from Plymouth to officiate. Good for him
Adam Larkin came on for his debut, replacing Tom Wilson, but it was Stockport who took advantage of Dixon’s absence with right winger James Drew scoring – yet again in the corner. This time Bebbington missed.
The West pack kept plugging away and Paul Moss managed a trade mark break through the centre but he was hauled down.
Cameron did cross the line, for what would have been a well deserved try, but play was brought back for a knock on.
To add insult to injury Stockport got their fourth try, and their bonus point, six minutes into added time. Centre Craig Cooper completing the scoring to make it 31-0 at the whistle.
