A howling wind blew down the pitch which spoiled the game.
It was also ruined by the fact that it was 14-a-side for much of the game after West skipper Anth Carr and Tigers prop Simon Bunting were red-carded on 31 minutes for a punch-up which resembled a scene from a Rocky film.
West's chances were no aided either by losing Tom Dixon the night before the game after being involved in a road accident.
Carl Robinson, sent off on West's last visit to Dore Moor, did not make the match because of mumps, while fellow prop Chris Stewart turned out despite being ill all week.
Stewart managed to struggle through 45 minutes before coming off, leaving West with a front row of Paul Vinnicombe, Andrew Dixon and Tim Sawyer.
Vinni hurt his neck but soldiered on until the later stages when uncontested scrums came into play.
Basically, anything which could have gone wrong for West did.
There is little in the way of rugby to tell you about.
Sheffield Tigers had two chances at the start and end of the first half, winger Gareth Morley and full-back Jimmy Pearson going close in the right-hand corner.
But Tigers did score just after both moves.
Charlie Spon-Smith's second-minute penalty just made it over into the gale and the veteran Dave Scully just got over for a try on 39 minutes despite West seemingly getting hands under the stand-off's arms.
West did though lead 9-8 at the break, Paul Moss putting over three beautifully-struck penalties.
It was never going to be enough for West, particularly after Aaron Myers was yellow-carded after 45 minutes. While he was in the sin-bin, Spon-Smith made it 14-9 with two penalties.
West played quite well into the wind and their efforts deserved a try. But the visitors were penalised for crossing when a try looked on after an hour and Tim Sawyer was held up over the line near the end.
The only points came from the boot of Spon-Smith, who added two penalties on 64 and 79 minutes.
Young lock Ben Lloyd got a league debut in the dying minutes, one of the few bright moments to a gloomy afternoon.
