Richie Stars as Rain Stays Away For Hythe Win

Tom RICHARDS 52*

With rain everywhere else teeming down Blackfield stayed dry as Hythe 3rd XI recorded a 5 wicket win over fellow Central 4 side Burridge IV.

Tom Richards capped a good day with 3 wickets and 52 not out - his first of many league fifties we hope. Adriaan de Jager guested for the 3rds and made 60 including 3 sixes.

A late change saw skipper Pete Stevens make way for newbie Adrian de Jager who only got off the plane 24 hours earlier. Tony North captained the side but Woody tossed up and elected to field first in surprisingly dry conditions.

Hythe opened the bowling with Jonjo Stovell and Luke Blackwell and the pair put in good tight spells as only 24 came of the first 10. The old timers of Chiverton and Kev McCarthy came on first change and it was super Kev who struck the first blow - having Dymot LBW for 10 at 31 for 1. Chiverton's 5 overs went for 11 and at drinks Burridge were struggling at 45 for 1. Northy kept the pressure on by introducing De Jager to the attack. McCarthy struck again in the 21st over when an excellent overhead catch by De Jager got Burham for 15. W.Candy was then caught by Richards bowled by De Jager for 0 - Burridge 49 for 3.

Slaughter began to let loose and McCarthy finished his spell 7 overs 2 for 26. Josh Mead replaced him with 4 very good overs for 4 runs. Richards was then introduced and struck with two wickets in his first over. J.Hiscock was well caught by Josh Mead for 11 and C.Harding was caught behind by North for 1.

Burridge then fought back with a 52 run partnership between Slaught and Shipley - Slaughter bringing up his fifty including 8x4's and 3x6. At 137 Slaughter finally went caught by Josh Mead for 58. Burridge finishing on a respectable 150 for 6 with A.Shipley 33 not out. Tom Richards 4 overs being spoilt at the end 3-27 and Paul Quinell coming on at the death 0-24 off 3.

After a long debate Hythe opened with Tom Huxley and Sam Mead - by the 4th over both were sitting down thinking - if only. Hythe 9 for 2. That brought together Tom Richards and Adriaan de Jager and the pair put on an iumpressive 98 run partnership. De Jager scored 60 including 8x4's and 3x6's before being caught just after drinks with the score on 107 for 3. Stovell gave away his wicket in Andrew Woods style for 12 and North was bowled for 5 before Richards brought up a fine fifty which included 4x4's & 1x6. Hythe brought up the winning runs through Quinnell in the 35th over to record a fine win. Richards 52 not out at the end.

A fine pre season friendly played in a good spirit.
