Only played for Hythe for five
seasons but without question the finest opening batsman to play
for the club. Dave joned the club in 1980 from Deanery where he
use to bat 7 or 8 and very occasionally bowled. George Knights
new of his talents and quickly turned him into an opening batsman
who never gave his wicket away and if he was still there after 20
overs then guaranteed a century was on the cards.
During the 1980 season Dave scored
453 league runs @ an average 37.75. He also scored 107 in a
friendly vs New Milton
In 1981 he was a big factor in
Hythe winning the Sydney Wyatt Cup.
Then in 1982 he scored 600 runs
averaging 47.61 in the Southern League and over 1,200 overall in
the season for Hythe. He scored tons - 103 vs Poole, 105 v
Lymington, and 125 vs Bournemouth. He also chipped in with 7-27
vs Petersfield.
Price then followed that up in
1983 with 674 runs as Hythe finished second in the Southern
League after losing three of their first four matches. Price
scored another league ton this time against Old Tauntonians where
with Mel Hussain they formed a prolific partnership and put on
230 against Old Tauntonians for the third wicket.
Price then had his best season for
the club in 1984, despite Hythe only finishing 5th Price scored
an incredible 775 Southern League runs @ 65.48 and took 23
wickets. This included tons against Petersfield (104), South
Hants TC(118*) and Alton (103). He also scored 151 against
Krakatoain a friendly.
Sadly after the 1984 season Price
had to move away with work committments ending up in Belguim.
Such was his craving for sricket he use to travel 100 miles each
weekend from Brussels to the Hague to play the game. He later
moved out to Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately Hythe were never the
same force without him.
George Knights described Dave
Price as not only a fine batsman but also a steady seam bowler,
good clubman and the best slip fielder he ever played with.
