Both sides were missing England players. One of the home centres was in Wales with West's Aaron Myers who started the England game and was on the winning side.
The Colts suffered an early blow when kicker Tom Bellerby suffered ligament damage. He soldiered on, but was obviously out of sorts and there was a further blow on ten minutes when dynamic back row Nick Miller limped off with a pulled hamstring.
Against a very determined and skilful home side we managed to keep the score to 7-0 until the dying seconds of the first half when the home full back sprinted through a gap to make it 12-0.
But, with the slope and the strong wind behind us, there was a sense of optimismn and the forwards took the game to Old Northamptonians camping in their 22 for the first 15 minutes. But the home defence was magnificent and we only had one missed Tom Bellerby penalty to show for our efforts.
The home side have been very well coached in modern rugby, with their defence on the very edge, and they had three players sin-binned in the second half but still managed to hold us at bay.
So no complaints. The good news is that a major part of the squad will be still be around next year together with some very good Under 17's coming up through the ranks.
And this side have brought nothing but credit to the club and still have County Cups and tours to France to look forward to.
