The opening ten minutes were fairly even, but the Dinnington pack, always powerful, were using their rolling maul effectively, and gradually securing ball and territory. The Yorkshire side deservedly took the lead when quick ball from a maul sent the right winger through to dance past a couple of tackles and score under the posts. West were on the back foot, but they fought back, and two penalties from Rob Bellerby pulled the difference back to one point. Dinnington were still on top however, and a rolling maul from a five-metre line-out stretched their lead, to be followed soon after by a break by the left winger, who evaded some slack marking and tackling to score a third try. With both being well converted, West went in at half-time trailing 21-6, with Dinnington being worthy of the lead. The second half began in the same fashion, and the Dinnington forwards went over again with their trademark try. West’s proud record of not conceding more than thirty points in a match for the last three years was looking vulnerable, but suddenly, with fifteen minutes left, they turned the game around and at last started to impose their style of play on the opposition. Dinnington began to tire, and West started to put pressure on in the opponents’ half. A series of attacking moves led to Chris Lambert going over under the posts, and in the final play Rob Bellerby did the same. Both were converted, but West had run out of time. Dinnington’s win makes them firm favourites to take the title, putting them six points clear of West and Wharfedale. They are a skilful and well-organised side, but West’s second-half put them under pressure, and did West much credit. Next week sees the National Cup quarter-final at Old Northamptonians, kick-off 2 pm, bus leaving West 8 am.
