West arrived at the Wakefield club without Greenwell, Myers and Norris (all on representative duty), and with Austin, Hunt, Miller and Wager all unavailable. The hosts, given the late arrangements, fielded five u16 players.

Although West dominated the first half in terms of territory and possession, they failed to break through, with good Sandal defence being aided by some wayward final passes and some poor decision making. At half-time only a Rob Bellerby penalty separated the two sides.

In the second half, however, West’s superiority told, and they ran in five tries, with Chris Lambert and Stephen Short scoring two each, and Tom Dixon going over in the final play. Bellerby added three conversions, and the West support went home happy with an impressive and entertaining second-half performance.
