The Tour Party at the Sitges Beach 7's |
| The Beach 7s were the main reason we were there. It is a superbly organised competition with a lot of hard work put in by our hosts RC Sitges who include former West player Kevin Owen Wellis in their ranks. |
| Twelve teams contested the men's event including City University from London and a team affiliated to Barcelona football club - a lot of shirt swapping went on with them afterwards! |
| Most of the teams were vastly more familiar with the
baking heat and soft sand than we were but, after a slow
start we managed to remain unbeaten, and only went into
the Plate because of a couple of early draws. In the final we met our hosts again [by this time under floodlights] and in a highly competitive game we won the trophy thanks to a superb individual try from Under 17s skipper Aaron Myers. He took on the unaccustomed role of scrum half but made a blind side break and forced his way over. Aaaron was undoubtedly one of the stars of the tour, despite arriving after the 15 a side game, with fellow Under 17 Gavin Robinson also looking totally at home at fly half. Stags skipper Greg Edwards also did well although it was Davy Tighe who won man of the match in the first game and who had the opposition troubled throughout the 7s. |
