A strong wind blowing down the pitch influenced the pattern of the game. West played with in the first half, and used it effectively, running in four tries for a 26-0 half-time lead.

Flanker Aaron  Myers touched down after five minutes, following a good scrum by the forwards. After twelve minutes a neat pass from second-row Andy Robson gave inside centre Peter Dewhirst the opportunity to go through for the second try. A strong run by outside centre Stephen Short led to flanker Tom Barker picking up loose ball and scoring the third after twenty minutes, and some neat interplay just before half-time created the opening for scrum-half Tom Dougherty to score the fourth. Three conversions from Tom Dixon gave West a deserved half-time lead. 

Inevitably Middlesbrough, with the wind, had more of the second-half, although West still threatened their line on several occasions, and could have added to their score. It was the visitors who scored the half’s only try, however, although they could add no more. West played the last fifteen minutes with progressively fewer players as, with both replacements already used, first Gareth Eddy, then Tom Dixon, and then Chris Lambert, hobbled off. West held out, however, to finish deserving 26-7 winners. 

This was a good, entertaining game, between two committed sides. Next week sees West travel to Dinnington, in second place in the League, for a 12.30 kick-off. Could be interesting!
