Brett Cullinane and Carlo Robinson both went close in the opening surge. All we had to show was a penalty attempt from Davy Tighe which was well placed and on the Rovers 22. But the swirling wind which was running diagonally across the pitch took the ball just wide of the upright.
Rovers had first use of the gale and kicked for position to set up their heavier pack. They scored three tries in the first half - on 17, 28 and 39 minutes - all from mauls. The wind made all three conversions nigh on impossible.
We turned round with hope that the elements could keep the game in their half, but the Rovers pack were in no mood to give up their lead.
Wallis did get a good penalty but Rovers again finished off a maul before Paul Miller got a debut try for West.
The young centre chased down a good kick over the top from Steve Black and beat Phil Hall to the bounce. It was no more than a consolation.
Worse news for West was a shoulder injury to Davy Tighe which will heep out for several weeks. Darren Thomas was sent off after a rucus on the touchline which meant we finished with Paul Moss at scrum half and Panda at 10.
