We appealed in vain for penalty try after no less than 8 decisions against the home side who were camped in their own corner. But the ref wasn't forthcoming and Hull stormed back up the pitch and got a try in the dying seconds of a half which had actually lasted 55 minutes. |
| Hull's physio did more running than
anyone on the pitch and she deserves a bonus. It led to a
stop start game which didn't finish until 4.50! Hull used their size and experience to advantage in the second half and romped away with it as our heads went down. Our cause wasn't helped by the fact that Allan Milne was left groggy and unable to carry on after two very high tackles early in the game. Paul Moss came on, and did an excellent job against a former Rugby League Tongan in the shape of Hull skipper Mea David. With both regular centres missing we were unable to exploit our increasing lack of possession. We also went on have Tim Sawyer binned on 54 minutes and Brett Cullinane on 78 minutes. It had been different in the first half when two penalties in the first couple of minutes put us 6-0 down. We clawed our way back in to the game and were the dominant side in the second quarter after Tim Sawyer scampered home from a well driven maul on 14 minutes, and Davy Tighe slotting an excellent conversion. Hull were down to 14 at the time with lock Gareth Jackson in the sin bin. Allan Milne looked like he might have been going to increase that score when he went inside 15 metres out but that trailing arm snaked round his neck and brought him down to earth with a thud. The ref didn't halt play even though the West medics were concerned about Allan's condition to give him immediate attention. Milney had to come off after 30 minutes. Ironically, we did get a penalty try in the dying seconds after a couple of infringements and that made the score a more respectable 37-14. Hull were just too powerful on the day and there won't be many sides coming away with points from Haworth Park. They have a side packed with bulk and experience especially in the shape of former Welsh stand off Gary Pearce who John Stabler claimed was at "at least 45!" In the end Hull just had too many pounds and too many years on us. We fought hard against a much bigger side but the turning point came when 20 minutes of pressure at the end of the first half failed to get us any points. We were leading 7-6 at that point.
