| By all accounts Stu Bennett's last words on leaving
the dressing room were "let's have no body sent
off." Two minutes into the game he became the first
of several yellows with Rudd and an unlucky Chocky among
them. Refusing to retreat ten yards and backchat were the main offences. It didn't please the coaches and Rod said after the game: "I was really pleased with the way the young lads coped and they had much more discipline than the established first teamers. That will have to change." Any game against Old Boys comes with its share of fronting up and Stubbsy blamed Bennett and Tones for winding his players up - Bennett and Co felt the blame rested with Bond and and one or two others. It was a lively baptism for the young players who were fed into the side alongside the superb Cullinane and Sawyer in the pack and Milne, Thompson and Hodgson in the backs. Hodgy was back after his long term shoulder injury and managed a try or two and looked superbly strong. Unfortunately he's off to Australia for a couple of weeks and will miss the start of the league season. After an even start we got on top and even with a side half full of 17 and 18 year olds we managed to keep a clean sheet until the very last minute when Gareth Foreman got Old Boys deserved consolation try. In between we'd run in a bagful of tries which gave Davy Tighe some kicking practice - he will no doubt be getting more before the Sandal game. |

The best thing about this hard earned victory was the way the young bloods coped in what was most certainly a mans game - the downside was the indiscipline shown mainly by the "old stagers."
