It happened when they slotted a penalty. From the restart Chocky took out the catcher when he was still two foot off the ground. Referee Mike Hodgson flashed the yellow and West Park extended their lead while he was off and then added two late tries.

It had been a much better game for the forwards but our backs threatened little.

In fact, the forwards began at a tremendous pace and were unlukcy not to go over in the first few minutes in the left hand corner. West Park eventually conceded a pen but Stabs missed from wide on the left.

But our good work was undone when they got two confidence boosting breaks. Stand off Ryan was involved in both first setting up an attack which made 50 metres and ended with Bibby their No 8 diving over. Two minutes later it was his centre brother who finished off anopher break, and we were 10-0 down and looking like getting a hiding.

But we shored up the defence and came back at them with some more great forward play specially from Brett Cullinane, Henry Tones and Stu Benentt, who was revelling in his first game, and making some serious yards.

It was Brett who finished off another forwards burst again in the left hand corner. He received a kick in the face, and a flattening from his own teammamtes, as he just managed to get the ball over the line. Stabs missed but got a penalty on 37 minutes to make it 8-10.

That would have been a decent half time return but winger Roberts went over just before the break to make it 8-13.

We came out strongly and Stabs added a 40 metre penalty to put us in with a real chance at 11-13.... or so we thought.

West Park have a big pack, and you could see why they turned Darlington over last week, but in the second third of the game they were clearly rattled by the tenacity and organisation of our pack. Sadly the backs were out of sorts.

The first yellows of the afternoon came on 55 minutes when debutant Glynn Dono squared up to C Bibby. No contact was made, unlike a first half incident involving the two skippers - Jamie Connolly and Fletcher, but the yellow was shown to both nonetheless.

West continued to attack but Park went further ahead when Roberts struck a penalty. It was from this restart that Chocky had his rush of blood to the head taking us down to 13 men.

Park attacked up the right and, despite some defiant tackling, McLouglin went over in the corner to stretch the gap to ten points.

That was it as a contest. West fought on but Hennessey and Fletcher added two late tries to rub salt in the wounds.

We will get a better picture of West's chances when we host Driffield next week. But the performance of the pack after the Chester debacle was reassuring, specially with White, Parker and Sawyer all available next week. Little worked for the backs although they did manage to shore up the defence. Hare and Dono got very little ball while Darren Thomas saw plenty of it and had another excellent game.
