It is with great sadness that the club learnt today of the sudden death of Alex Best at the age of 30. The highly popular back row also played for Tech and Hartlepool before returning to West where he was awarded a Championship medal for promotion season 2007-2008.

This season he returned from injury to play for the Stags against Middlesbrough in December scoring a try in the closing stages. However, he broke his nose in that game and hadn't returned to the playing field this season.

Tonight's Pyman Cup game, between the Stags and the Amateurs, will go ahead in honour of Alex who had represented both sides. There will be a one minute silence before kick off at 6.30.

The thoughts of everyone at West are with his family, his many close friends within the club and his friends in the wider Hartlepool rugby community.
