The gale blew almost straight down the pitch, making it a proverbial game of two halves, but both sides deserve credit for keeping the ball in hand and trying to play open rugby.
Two late tries flattered the hosts - a point which even the Referee's assessor acknowledged as he warmly praised both sides for serving up a highly competitive game. Incidentally, referee Steve Penfold had an excellent game.
West had the benefit of the Siberian blast in the first half with the first opportunity coming after just two minutes when Stu Waites showing lots of vision with a subtle chipthrough. Andrew Cheslin just inches short of beating home full back Jerry Barnes to the touchdown.
West were pressing, but it was Beverley who got the first score in their first attack on ten minutes, with Jamie Gill slotting a penalty from wide on the right.
Paul Moss pulled one back, with a superbly struck penalty from wide on the left. With West out scrummaging the hosts, and winning their own line out ball, it was, perhaps, an odd choice to go for the points rather than a catch and drive in the corner - specially as that looked as though it would the only score West would have to show for their territorial advantage.
That was until Andrew Dixon struck in the final minute of the half.
Fly half Waites had intercepted in his home half, almost scoring his first try for the senior team, but was caught just five metres from the line.
The West forwards kept up the pressure to give Dixon his chance to finish off a series of forward drives with Moss narrowly wide with the conversion.
An 8-3 half time lead didn't look like nearly enough given the gale and so it was to prove. Beverley started the half with centre Richard Bussey finishing off a break by fly half Phil Duboulay. Gill's conversion gave the home side a 10-8 lead.
Stu Waites was injured in the build up to the score and limped off to be replaced by Gareth Kerr with Paul Moss moving to fly half.
Kerr made an immediate impact racing clear from his own 22, but his inside pass was judged to be forward as he was tackled just short of the home 22.
There was another blow when the excellent Chris Stewart also limped off to be replaced by Tim Sawyer. Dominic Morrison also came on for Dan Boatman but one of his first contributions was to be penalized on the 22 giving Gill an easy three points.
It had been an even tempered war of attrition in the forwards which briefly flared up when Iain Robinson and Beverley flanker Frali Hopa were sin-binned for a disagreement at a line-out.
The game was far from over. West's scrummaging against a far bigger pack was winning lots of ball and the game was in the balance until the 75th minute. A West attack was broken up on the half way line to set up a break for the home backs. Full back Barnes on hand to pick up and dive over after winger Gill was brought down just short of the line. The conversion was narrowly wide.
The final score came just a minute later when Duboulay chipped through and followed up to score under the posts.
It was a scoreline West didn't deserve with Stewart and Vinnicombe leading from the front and Peter Hodgson, in particular, putting in some tremendous defence in the backs.
