Wensleydale had much the bigger pack and were able to use this advantage plus the breeze to keep putting West back down in their own half despite constant threatening raids from the home side.
It took until the 30th minute when West prop Hogan made a break into the visitors territory and West were able to use this position to force an error from Wensleydale.

West caught a lineout 10 metres out and drove for the line. The visitors came offside and Stu Waites took a quick tap to jink his way to the line for the only score of the first half.
At this point hooker ‘Karlos’ Graham had to leave the field with a cut to his forehead. He went to hospital where they said they don’t glue faces anymore as it scars. When they saw it was Karlos they went and got the glue anyway.

From the kick off in the 2nd half tries were to come at regular intervals. First of all debutant Youll in the centre made a break to the Wensleydale line before offloading to centre partner Alex Barker who took a great line to charge over.(10-0)
A short time later West were running the ball through their backs and chipped over. The full back fielded the ball but was caught in possession. As he went to ground he released the ball and Barker was once again on hand to pounce and score the try (15-0).

The resultant kick off did not go 10 and the visitors did not play the ball. Back row Jonno Skidmore caught it and charged upfield before being hauled down just short of the ‘dale line. Lo and behold that man Barker (ok he’s 17, he’s nearly a man) was on hand for his hat trick score (20-0).

Once again from the kick off the forwards won the ball and the West backs ably led by old hand Duncan Scarr at fly half spun the ball wide. Winger Anthony Elliott made good yards before the ball was moved back inside for Youll to race in from 25 yards (25-0).

West were back on the attack shortly after and after a quick tap moved the ball wide but seemed to have messed up. However the ball was recycled and moved back across the pitch where Youll straightened the attack and beat 4 men on his way under the posts. Waites managed to convert this one.(32-0)
Wensleydale were eventually able to launch an attack into the West half and they moved the ball along the line for West winger Scott Parker (now playing for the opposition) to touch down in the corner (32-5).

The final score of the match went to Stu Waites when a poor clearance kick from the visitors found its way to the West backs who moved it wide. Flanker Gary Jackson, having his best game of the season so far, received the ball and unselfishly passed to the dynamic scrum half who went over wide out.

A good victory against the leaders who won most of the scrum ball due to their huge front row which meant West had to get ball from other areas. The youngsters in the front row battled hard and as one of them said, “Now I know what its like to scrummage against a Vauxhall Corsa!”. A steep learning curve but one that has been travelled by many a front row in the past.
