Mikey Young is joining Aaron Myers in playing National League rugby next season. Falcons have placed Mikey with Tynedale, where Mark laycock is also playing, while Aaron has been seconded to Mowden Park. It's good news for both lads and they will both be hard to replace ....

However, Darren Thomas will soon be back from his year down under and Davy Tighe will soon be fit again. With teenage Irish exiles scrum half Tom Dougherty also in the frame there is strong competition for the 9 shirt.

And it's the same in the back row. Chocky return from suspension puts him as a possible candidate for a No 8 berth alongside back row regulars the Boatman, Henry Tones and Carl Miller.

Newcastle Falcons have again engaged with local clubs to ensure game time for their up-and-coming players throughout the 2007/8 season.

As well as their Falcons commitments a host of players will also turn out regularly on the local scene, with director of rugby, John Fletcher, saying: “It’s a vital part of their development.

“The players train with us all week but we cannot always give them the necessary game time, even allowing for Guinness A League fixtures. This does not mean the players aren’t in consideration for our first team, we watch them every day in training and they will get a fair crack of the whip, but it just means they have guaranteed game time to keep them match sharp throughout the year.

“We are fortunate enough to have a number of excellent local clubs within the north-east who can offer game time to these lads, and the partnerships have an obvious benefit to these clubs as well because they are getting some outstanding young players to represent them.”

Among the Falcons players turning out for local clubs are a number with first team experience, including wing Tim Visser, hookers Rob Vickers and Ross Batty, fly half Gavin Beasley, No.8 Greg Irvin and centre Adam Dehaty.

In addition the Falcons also have players situated further afield at Cornish Pirates, Doncaster, Oxford University and Loughborough University.
