With people already talking about signings at their own clubs. What are we doing about it?

I hope the "coaching staff" are in talks already and we don`t wait until the last minute, as usual!!

Anybody heard anything?

What are the aspirations at West? I just don't see how paying players can be viable at the level the clubs are playing at. You just need to look up through the divisions and see how clubs are struggling in the "semi-pro" arena. For similar money one could transform mini and junior rugby in the local area. Getting more kids playing and providing them with quality coaching is surely where the future lies for clubs such as The Portaloos, The Pasties and The Smoggies.

Thought that was what we are doing. Look at how many home grown players are playing adult rugby at West. Then we have players like the Boatmans who just seem to enjoy playing at the club and making a tremendous contribution.

Don't you think the "merry go round" signing of players in the North East is a real problem; I would stick with what you've got who are committed the club and perhaps see whther you can attract any up and comers from lower leagues who fancy a higher challenge; getting involved in prising players away from other clubs with cash just ends in tears.

I don’t want to start any gossip but......

I understand Mike Catt does not want to be the oldest player in the London Irish squad so he is looking for an older player.

The headline I have heard they are preparing is "Peter Wilkinson returns to first class rugby....."

It is my understanding that Mr Wilkinson played for west first shortly after hostilities in Europe ended.

(where I live it a case of Basil Faulty “don’t mention the war”)

Lush - So how do West sign these new quality players? Where will the money come from?

Corporate sponsorship is dead in the water at the moment...although I have heard that portakabin may be good for a few bob :-P

I allways wonder what motives people from other clubs have in speculating about our affairs. Having been beaten twice by West last season I suggest it is Boro who have mnore need to to start investing in new players.

So going by your logic you wouldn't be interested in Foreman, G. Foreman, A. Palmer or Chunky?

What about some of the Billingham lads. I am sure they would get into the West team.

There are many good players that play for lower league clubs that have the ability to play at a much higher level. However the choose not to for a variety of reason, one being that they love their club. Other reasons are family and work commitments stop them from travelling or training enough.

Agree with previous post, the level that west play at should they really be paying players, although they play at a half decent level it is still not national league level. I think only the top 3 levels should be paying players. Can any club fund themselves from relativly small gate receipts, small sponsorship and bar takings. Its a shame to see clubs paying players when their facilities are run down and shabby. I am not having a go at west's ground but other clubs like rovers would benefit from spending players wages on improving pitches, training gounds, floodlights etc before paying players who are not that much better than most of the players that play for free.

Lush - I did hear that Dan Carter was singing in the Royal Back last Saturday. He is signing for West this week.

PS - If you want a bite pop over to the darkside.

Rarf !!
