I know this is a bit late but been a bit busy!
I was fortunate to take a very strong select team up to South Tyne College where we blew them away in the first half.
Controlled, structured rugby was the order of the day against a large team.
The first try was a simple stroll in by winger Scott Parker when a great passage of play and indeed several passages of play saw the home side run out of defenders (Stu Waites converted) 0 - 7.
Next to score was Anth Carr who finished off a move after patient build up by the visitors. 12 - 0.
A driving maul from a line out brought the next score for hooker Ross Wood. 17 - 0.
Anthony Cameron picked up from a 5 metre scrum to power over for the next after more controlled play had put the visitors under pressure. (Stu Waites conv) 24 - 0.
Finally the ball was moved wide for Craig Swales and James Masshedar to combine brilliantly and move close to the line. A ruck was set up from which Stu Waites was able to break and go over. He was able to convert. 31 - 0
This was the last score of the half and indeed the match. The second half was a scrappy affair. College came more into the game and West seemed to lose concentration at vital times.
With the other select team also winning 54 - 14 hopefully all players enjoyed themselves and it may be asomething we try again later in the season.
For the away select there were 5 19 year olds in the pack (the sub was 19)supplemented with Anth Carr, Henry Tones, Chris Young and Anth Cameron and the youngsters will have gained a great deal from playing alongside their more experienced colleagues. Again in the backs 5 more 19 year olds (with another 19 year old sub) played really well in the first half ably led by Phil Wallis, Simon Cavey and James Masshedar.
