I know I am going back a hell of a lot of posts here but there is a difference between club paying players and sponsors paying players.
As a club revenue is raised from membership, gate receipts and bar takings. This is money paid to the club by players from 1st XV down to the mini's and supporters and is used to maintain and improve the facilities both social and playing at the club, for the benefit of all and to invest in the longevity of the club as it it moves forward.
This money is not used to pay players and should not be as this would essentially be players and supporters paying for there own players.
A sponsor using his/her money to pay players or, provide free shorts and socks, or, tracksuits for the 1st XV, is the reason for sponsorship, its to pay for those things which are immediate. Thats why clubs sell space on the shirts, sell advertising space around the ground etc. actively court new sponsors.
I know it might seem as if I am spliting hairs but my membership money and the money I pay in subs and the money I spend behind the bar, is not paying Craig Lee or whoever and as the membership is the "club", the "club" is not paying players.
