That will see the Firsts take on league leaders Middlesbrough (kick off 3.00) who are in a last day shoot-out with Northen. Both have identical playing records save for the fact that Boro have score nine more points.

Northern are also away. They will travel to Consett with the same aim as their rivals. Win the game, score at least four tries and try to make the winning margin as large as possible and then hope for the best. Both West and Consett will not want to be sacrificial lambs in front of big crowds.

The West faithful have known for some weeks that the first team will finish fourth, come what may, and that’s a great return on the second season back at level 6. It could have been better as there were several games where lack of concentration, and disputed penalty tries, have snatched victory away in the last seconds. Notably Northern at home and City and Keswick away.

It’s two weeks since the last league game where both the senior teams were badly hit by more than 20 players unavailable, for a variety of reasons. Fortunately, there’s a few more players available this week with top scorer Max Tennant back on the wing and Isaac Robinson returning to the back row where a very fit looking Jay Corbett moves to No. 8 – Peter Youll returning to the centre.

Andrew Rollins is set to make his 200th appearance in a West shirt (he has many more playing for both Mowden Park and Huddersfield) and will pack down in a front row alongside Adam Hutchinson and Liam Pennick.

Jake Linighan is also back and will partner Nick Bennions in the second row. The latter had an excellent game for the Stags at Billingham last week and his teammates will be in action at Rovers tonight (Friday) in a double header – so 10 points at stake in this one as the Stags look to make the most of their games in hand in the CaNDY league.

The club’s philosophy is wherever possible games are played rather than accept a walkover and the five points which come with that. So the race is on to fit those games into the end of season.

The experienced Michael Hogan, thankfully recovered from knee surgery, takes his place in the starting line-up. Aidan Jackson-Smith will be at No.8 for the Stags, and on the bench for the firsts tomorrow with winger Lewis Scott doing the same. Scott Butcher will be making one of his cameo appearances from the bench.

There’s also a welcome return to action for Liam Bailey who is in the Bucks squad to take on Boro Thirds on Saturday, alongside Adam Coates and Jonny Boatman.
