Beverley Preview
The long trip to Beaver Park is always one of the most difficult of the season and that's nothing to do with getting round the York ring road ..

In our first three league trips to Beverley we failed to come away with any points, but finally did gain a hard fought 13-9 win back in  November 2011.

Since then the paths of both sides haven't crossed but we meet again after Bev were relegated from the national leagues after a disastrous season by their standards. They won only two games during the whole of the campaign, and their last home league game saw them concede 90 points to Huddersfield YMCA.

As a result they've lost eight players over the summer and have revised their strategy over bringing in players from outside East Yorks.

Instead they are bringing on their own players with the intention to consolidate and build a side capable of promotion

That's our philospophy as well, of course, with only two of tomorrow's squad not having learnt their rugby in West minis and juniors - namely Messrs Bennett and Boatman.

It's a credit to our minis and juniors that there are at least an additional ten or so players knocking on the first team door.

But you can only select 18 and that list won't include Aaron Myers, who has work commitments, or Stu Waites and John Bunter who are both injured.

Stu injured an elbow againt Rochdale, and has been given another week's rest,  while Bunter damaged an ankle against Billingham after impressing in the line-out against 'Dale.

Fortunately, Chris Atkins (pictured) is able to make his first start of the season after being one of the stand-out contributors last time around. He'll partner Owen Bennett  the only change in a pack which had the edge on Billingham last week.

Gav Painter continues at fly-half after coming safely through his first game for over a year, and showing the touches which made him a highly respected national league player.

West: Zac Southern, Scott Butcher, Eldon Myers, Peter Youll, Luke Mallinson, Gavin Painter, Ryan Painter, Ross Wood, Andrew Rollins, Adam Coates, Owen Bennett, Chris Atkins, Liam Bailey, Dan Boatman (captain), Sam Miller.

Interchanges: Greg Edwards, Joe Rafferty, Jack Angus.

Good luck to all our sides this season. I think this will be an important season for the First XV as last season was a bit of a transitional one and one where we certainly lost our way in mid-season. Fortunately Horden beating us gave us a kick up the proverbials.
Good side out tomorrow and they need to hit the ground running and get some points on the board.

Why is there hardly any mention of Aaron Myers? Is he still with us?

Yes I like to be both positive and objective.
The positive bit is that we have a good side out tomorrow and the objective bit is admitting we were poor in the middle third of last season. Don't want that happening again as we were getting nervous about being relegated.

Was that a sniff of attempted censorship from Mr Neville's Slippers?
