Vets Win at Rovers

Vets Win at Rovers
Which vet stands on tip toes for the team photo??? After numerous cry offs during the week it started to look doubtful that a second vets game would go ahead. ..

Vets ar Rovers

With many who played in the 1st game not playing this team was very much changed but as usual the team pulled together and the outcome was a second win.

Unfortunately further disappointment came in the warm up with Graham Frankland pulling his Calf.

The forwards looked lighter than the rovers pack but that didn't affect the scrum one bit with Andrew Dixon on the tight head up against the experienced Dave Carroll and Fat Cam back after a few years out to have a trundle.

We started well with Kev Oliphant calling the shots at 10 and the backs looked good with lines of running from Mixie Parker and Steve Jones. Our pace was soon used when Jones broke down the middle only to be tackled just short of the line but Graham Scott was on hand for the off load to go over unopposed.  Fat Cam converting.

The line out was functioning well especially on the Rovers throw were Dave Brown stole ball numerous times with great help from Martin Howard and Morgan Hamilton lifting.

The second try was scored by Paul Dixon after good work from the forwards. Fat Cam converting again. Scott added a 3rd and his 2nd of the game but then we went to sleep for a while with some missed tackles and Rovers scored a couple of good try's of their own.

A couple of spectators helped us out for periods of the game due to not having any subs their names I think were Coasty and Waites. They did ok but I think the vets pace got to them a bit. Sos arrived to boost the squad and replaced Coasty at 6 at half time.

A big plus point of the game was when Jamie Connolly cried off on the morning only to send his mate instead. Phill Rutter turned out to have a man of the match performance after putting the boots back on after 15 yrs. He started on the wing with a few Lomuesk barnstorming runs and looked a class act.

He then moved in field swapping with Mixie to continue he fine performance.  Oli departed the field with 20 mins to go with a hamstring injury so Mixie moved to 10. Jon Cole playing at 9 looked to have found his level and was constantly on mazy runs all game which was awarded with a try of his own.

Coasty scored in the corner after good rucking, fat cam hitting the post with the conversion. Rovers hit back again and with 5 to go there was only 3 points in it. It got a bit heated at times as you would expect in a derby game and the packs came together with their handbags Dixon in the thick of it.

Jones was very much involved and his hard worked payed off when he weaved his way over at the clubhouse end to score. To some dismay of the Rovers crowd they weren't happy with his grounding and they went mad. But the ref deemed it ok and gave it, fat cam just going wide with the conversion.

Final score West 34 Rovers 26
