Ryton started well and were unlucky not to score as the impressive centre Jack Lewis burst through the middle at pace.  However, an excellent covering tackle by full back Connor Turner saved a certain try.

  Ryton had some strong running players but a big hit by West winger Craig Palliser showed the commitment running throughout the side.

West began to take control of the game and a strong run and by Darren Parker and a good offload to Adam Phillips who fed Luke Armstrong saw the home side score first, Turner converting.  Miller led from the front with some excellent first-up tackling and it was a fair reward when the hooker powered over after a strong drive to make it 12-0.

As half time approached a tremendous tackle by Elliott Scott stopped the Ryton attack dead in its tracks.

Both teams were certainly trying to play attractive rugby and West went further ahead after a good break by Adam Phillips saw him send Scott away for a 17-0 lead. Ryton still looked dangerous when they ran the ball, with flankers Lewis Smith and Matty Wilcox having outstanding games.

It was a fair reward when Jack Lewis crossed the line for the visitors.  With the wind behind them, Ryton looked set to make a game of it, but unfortunately for them the home side roared through the gears and responded with a barrage of tries. First Kyle Jamieson made a break in the centre to feed Luke Armstrong, then Lewis Patterson raced over, Turner converting both.

Right from the kick off, Jack Smith caught the ball and drove right through the middle to feed Miller.  Smith repeated the trick from the next kick off and after he was brought down the ball was moved wide for Miller to complete his hat trick. 

Ryton suffered from not having a full squad and they will certainly be a different proposition on their home turf.  However, West showed excellent defence and strong running which will have pleased their coaches and gives them a real platform for the season.
