The bleak mid winter had indeed arrived and Shepherds in the fields abiding had been watching o’er the pitch by night (as well as their flocks) as a late inspection confirmed the game on.
Although travelling (in cars rather than on donkeys) with only 11 men the “three-wise men” of the management team Messrs Quinn, Wilkinson and Frankland had issued the call……
“O Come all ye Faithful” to fellow players and the few came bearing great gifts of skill, power and pace to produce a victory to behold.
The hosts had shown great Christian spirit in lending us a player so that we played with 12 versus Bishops 13.
Rather than a “manger” this nativity was performed with the “saviour” arriving from “University at Nottingham – the prodigal son in fact!
It was Richard Frankland (Graham Frankland’s boy child!) with his exceptional pace that brought “Tidings of Great Joy” with two exceptional tries to take the 4th into the lead with Ben Cummins converting one.
The rest of the followers raised their game and Dox and Ben brought gifts of further outstanding tries with Ben getting another conversion.
Bishops did come back into the game using their superior numbers to register 3 tries and a couple of conversions.
But the “Christmas Miracle” was not to be denied and a great victory was achieved.
The whole team performed really well and played with heart and no little skill.
Stockton 3rds this coming Saturday….. so “Come all ye Faithful”….. and a few more as well! We’re on a roll!
