The home side were always favourites to win this encounter against a side which has yet to record a victory. Confidence grew even further when travel problems led to the visitors arriving just 20 minutes before kick-off.

Undaunted the youthful  Cumbrian side started well,  going into an early three point lead with a penalty in front of the posts from centre Elliott Armstrong.

The lead lasted  only a couple of minutes as West skipper Chris Atkins got his side going  - touching down as his pack pushed their way over from 15 metres.  Jobe Roxby getting the first of his nine conversions.

Wigton came back with some enterprising play,  but their lack of power in the set-piece proved to be their downfall,  with West Man of the match Andrew Rollins heavily involved in his side’s next two scores.

A burst into the 22 saw Adam Hutchinson in support,  and he was able to touchdown beside the posts. Then Rollins himself was unstoppable from a catch and drive(above) to take the score to 19-3 with just fifteen minutes played.

Back came the visitors with prop Lewis Shaw forcing his way over between the posts with Armstrong reducing West’s lead to nine points. Encouraged by the score Wigton continued to look lively.

However  when West returned  the  pressure,  it was the ever alert Aidan Jackson-Smith who  picked up from a maul on the 22 to race through a gap to go in  under the posts .

The try  bonus point was achievedwith just half an hour played, and all four had been scored  by forwards.

Max Tennant was the first of the backs to get on the scoresheet and he did it in some style. Picking up on  West’s ten metre line on the left wing he raced diagonally for the far corner outpacing three defenders on his way for the try of the game.

 As a result West went into the break with a 31-10 advantage,  but once again Wigton weren’t prepared to roll over. From the restart they attacked the West 22 with second row Ryan Armstrong powering his way through a gap. Brother Elliott wide with the conversion.

It was entertaining stuff with West right winger Lewis Scott  the next to show what he could do  in chasing a Matt Siddle kick down the right wing. A Wigton forward was the only player back covering his try line. He looked suitably startled to find that Scott had sprinted from the half-way line to get to the ball just he was about to pick up.

The West winger couldn’t take the ball himself but Atkins had been almost as quick in support and, as the ball squirted loose,  the skipper was grateful to get his second of the day to take the score to 38-15.

Atkins’ hat-trick wasn’t long in coming. Once again the West scrum was too strong and the No.8 had the simplest of tasks in touching down.

Not to be outdone Rollins completed his own hat-trick after Jake Linighan had looked like he  might go all the way after breaking from a maul That was soon followed by a smart finish from the enterprising Siddle.

Wigton continued to battle  andgetting  their reward when they opted for a tap penalty in the home 22 . Elliott Armstrong exploiting a gap and then adding the extras to take the score to 66-22.

Few would have begrudged his side an additional try to secure a bonus  point , but it wasn’t to be. Tennant once again showing his class by just getting on the end of a chip kick from Matt Baggs to complete the scoring (above).

The Bucks also turned on the style winning 34-5 at Houghton Bears in CaNDY Three but the Stags game at Billingham was called off as the home side couldn’t raise a second team.
