Teams To Take on Upper Eden

Teams To Take on Upper Eden
Matty Baggs
If the pitches dry out Upper Eden will provide the last home opposition of the season as we host both their First and Seconds. (Kick offs 2.00) ...

The Regional 2 North fixture represents the start of the second half of the season (notwithstanding the postponed game against Cockermouth, which will now be on January 20th) and it's an important one for both clubs.

Upper Eden currently occupy the second relegation place and are just three points behind West. There will still be 55 points to play for after this game but it's still a ten pointer.

West also have a bit of revenge in mind after suffering a big defeat at a very hot Pennine Park back in September. The 45-10 scoreline still represents the biggest losing margin of the season, so far.  Both sides were finding their feet after being promoted and it was very even game until hour mark when Upper Eden cut loose - scoring four tries in the  closing stages.

That game saw Matty Baggs' first start at scrum half. He acquitted himself very well and is back in the side this week with skipper Ryan Painter at fly-half. Roo would have been there last week as well if the Cockermouth game had been on.

Otherwise it's familiar looking West squad with Chris Atkins at No 8 and Jake Linighan back at lock. Jay Corbett will be looking to make his usual impact from the bench where Louis Adamson provides front row cover.

The Stags host Upper Eden Boars (England's last boar was reputedly despatched on the fells overlooking Pennine Park) in a CaNDY league game.

Will Hilditch is back from his exotic travels and will get the chance to get the jet lag out of his legs as he partners skipper Martin Todd in the centre.

Thanks Dave and just to add to your interesting fact...the Boar was despatched just at the turn of the 17th Century by all accounts and it was quite an occasion. They named the highest point in the Fells after Him/Her as Wild Boar Fell (708m) and part/parts of the unfortunate creature found their way into the saucepans at The Moorcock Inn at Garsdale Head.

Anyway, for anyone interested the traverse of Wild Boar Fell froms a great day's excursion, but make sure that you have a dry day otherwise it's a bu**er, esp in mist.

Park up at K.Stephen Railway Station and catch the mid morning Train (settle-Carlisle Service) for one stop and jump off at Garsdale Head, grab a Coffee/Bacon (or Boar)Sandwhich at the Moorcock Inn then head NW then North up Grisedale Crossing/Common and up to Swarth fell (608m). Continue north to Wild Boar Fell summit and descend (always headed north. 360Deg Mag, via Little Fell and Wharton Fell until you hit the A683 and back to your car at the Staion - 12 Miles.

Fab views of Mallerstang Valley, 3 Peaks, Cumbrian Fells and Scots Borders.

Plenty of choice for Refs in K.Stephen incl:-

Kings Arms - being refurbished I believe
The Mango Tree - Indian
Fish n Chips on the High St

Happy days ;-)

I like the look of this mid field selection - size matters - esp vs these Cumbrian teams.

No Surrender !

I like the Wainwright bit, Les! Is there any evidence he was of the Master Race?

Tally Ho Stan!

Local folklore has it that he/her had copper coloured tinting on the ears and muzzle ;-)

just another example of MR cleansing I'm affraid Stan. As you know, our copper coloured cousins have been targetted for milennia. I'm not sure if you are up to pace with "Corrie" out in the East of Europe but young Chesney has been targetted by Weatherfield Social Services now. The North West GLM movement are supporting him though.

And so Stan, as always, the struggle goes on ......

Inflation has slowed a slight tad back here in Blighty but still crippling us..... Monster Munch over a Pound a Bag now !!!

All safe and well out there I hope ? :-)
