Everyone at West is saddened to hear that Jonty our former first team captain, Durham County centre and stalwart in so many roles for Peterlee and  Horden rugby club has died suddenly at the age of 68 ..

The former Cleveland Police detective was one of the best known characters in North East rugby. As a goalkicking centre he played for West for ten years in the 1980's - captaining the side from 1983-85 in a golden era where he played  alongside the likes of All Blacks Gary and Alan Whetton.

On his return to Horden he served as both President and Chairman - playing a major role in the club's highly successful move "up the hill" to Peterlee where he thoroughly enjoyed showing everyone around the new facility.

He will be sadly missed by the whole rugby community. Our thoughts and sympathy are with his family and his friends "the leds."

Margaret and I have known Jonty and Glennis for 50 years.

I had the pleasure of playing against him at colts level and with him at First XV level. A true rugby man who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Our thoughts are with Glennis and all the family at this very sad time.

Very sad news. I played in the same team as Jonty many times back in the early/mid 1980s, and on the West Centenary tour to Canada in 1982. He was a great bloke, and will be sadly missed in the local rugby scene.
