Carlisle’s skipper suggested enough was enough after 68 minutes with West 24-10 up with both referee Yannick Debil and Ryan Painter agreeing. As the game had reached the hour mark the result stands.

That wasn’t the case in the CaNDY Division Two game which was abandoned with the Stags winning 19-0 and will now have to be replayed.

The blustery gale was blowing almost straight down the pitch from the clubhouse end, with conditions steadily deteriorating throughout the afternoon. The main pitch had been in perfect condition on the morning and held up well, with the only official grounds for calling the game off being travel issues. Carlisle decided they wanted to travel to get the fixture out of the way. Fortunately experiencing very little difficulty on the way across, and arriving back home safe and sound.

West had Storm Darragh in their faces in the first half and started off sensibly sticking the ball up the proverbial jumper - some good support play threatening the visiting line. The pressure eventually paid off after seven minutes with Mr Debil playing a penalty advantage for offside. Connor McLurg took that advantage (left) - forcing his way over from a couple of yards and close enough to the posts for Matt Siddle to convert. Carlisle reduced the arrears on the quarter hour with a penalty. At the same time West lost No 8 Chris Atkins to injury with Adam Hutchinson coming on.

West then lost second row Jonny Wray, a late replacement for a poorly Jake Linighan, to the bin when he failed to retreat from a tap penalty. The wind and rain were proving to be a big problem whether they were at your back or in your face, and Carlisle failed to take advantage of the sin-bin. As the half ran out, resorting to a penalty attempt from their own half which fell short.

The 7-3 half-time score looked an excellent return for a half ploughing into the gale and it got even better from the restart. Max Tennant calling for the ball and Ryan Painter putting in an excellent box-kick which the winger finished in his usual style.

Ten minutes later it was 17-3 and Painter and Tennant again combining on the left. Max was able to stop himself being bundled into touch - passing inside where the forwards set up an assault on the Carlisle line with Isaac Robinson eventually forcing his way over.

Two minutes later five bonus points and the victory were just about assured when Siddle made a great run through the middle. He kicked ahead looking a certainty to be the first to the touchdown only to be unceremoniously shoved in the back. Penalty try awarded and relief for Siddle who didn’t have to try another conversion.

Carlisle had fought hard throughout and were unlucky not to get a score with full-back Jake Whittaker knocking on as he chased down in the dead ball area.

They did get their try when a series of forward drives saw skipper Josh Holmes forcing his way over to setup a straightforward conversion.

The score led to more Carlisle pressure with West defending well. The danger eventually relieved when Peter Youll literally took one for his team. Mr Debil had awarded Carlisle a penalty in the West 22 but quickly reversed that decision when Youll received an elbow into his Adam’s Apple.

The player coach had to be led from the field struggling for breath. He did recover enough to take the microphone for the after match awards – West Man of the Match going to the hard working Will Corbett and Carlisle’s to try-scorer Holmes.

With that attack repulsed it was time to call it a day. Hopefully, conditions will be somewhat better next week as West head to league leaders Northern.
