West had the territorial advantage in that first half, but a combination of poor final passes and excellent Medicals defence kept the home side out. When Medicals did get into the West 22 in the closing stages of the half it needed a tremendous tackle from Isaac Robinson to prevent them taking the lead.
Medicals did score the first try shortly after the restart, but the lead didn't last long as West finally got the hang of the faster paced game which the coaches have been demanding. Will Corbett had come on at the break and he lost no time in forging through the middle to score - Matt Siddle's extensive kicking practice paying off with the first of his six conversions.
Sam Knight soon glided through for West's second try. With Medicals tiring after their first half efforts Andrew Rollins, Max Tennant, Siddle and Ollie Connolly all crossed before Knight finished his side's scoring. There was time for Medicals get a well deserved final score.
An encouraging start including a fine first half debut at scrum half for the quick passing Will Tighe, while at the other end of the age spectrum a rejuvenated Alex Barker showed the benefits of putting in the pre-season training. In between, there was a number of good performances and, with several other players available again next week, the coaches have a tough job on in picking the 18 to travel to Middlesbrough.
