That's especially good news as a lot was planned for the last home league game including match sponsorship from our club sponsor Borthwick Heating and Insulation, Points West where members donate 10p for every point scored by the first team, and singer Kieren Hooper in the Stag Bar from 7.00. Most of that is still going ahead with the first team squad mixing in for a few beers while the Points West Unsung Hero of 2023-24 is unveiled.
The Cockermouth cry-off means West will be given five points while Cockermouth, who had already had to pull out of a game at Percy Park, will be deducted five. Their club is very much a family run affair with the touch judge popping up to serve the post-match beers, and young family members doing all the running around collecting plates and selling raffle tickets. We hope they can keep their squad together to compete in Cumbria One next season.
We may, however, see them again this season. They are in the same Papa Johns Cup group as West where it has been confirmed we will take on Scarborough at Brinkburn on April 27th, after receiving a bye in the first round. (Not tempting fate but semi-final date is April 4th with the final at Mowden Park on April 12th).
The Stags, meanwhile, beat Peterlee and Horden in front of a big crowd in the first round of the Pyman Cup and will be looking to keep themselves sharp against Guisborough this week.
The game may once again see club physio Mike Geritz play alongside son Charlie - proving we are also a family club.
