However, the Brinkburn did score four of their own to earn a bonus point which not many sides will achieve at Preston Avenue this season.

The Park pack is experienced and in second rows Josh Hedley and Chris Reekie have the biggest second row in the league.

They came up against a West pack missing Jake Linighan, Chris Atkins and Isaac Robinson but with Jay Corbett and Liam Pennick -the former eventually having to go off with a knee injury but still being voted West Man of the Match by the opposition.

The pattern of the game was set from as early as the fifth minute when Park kicked a penalty to the corner  - hooker Dan Shuttleworth forcing his way over from close range to give his side a 5-0 lead.

It was honours even for the next 15 minutes as both teams served up some entertaining rugby. Park then seizing the opportunity to grab their second score when they pushed West off their own scrum with the ball whipped out left where home skipper Howard Stock crashed over in the corner. Ashley Smith adding the extras from the touchline.

Zac Southern , drafted in at inside centre, took on the role of West kicker but missed his first opportunity from the restart as Park went off their feet.

Another West pen also came to nought when the kick to the corner led to a lost line-out with Jay Corbett injured in the process.

However, West did have better luck when Park tried to run the ball in their own half. A pass from scrum half Andrew Walker landing at the feet of giant second row Hedley who chose to kick the ball skywards rather than try to pick it up off his distant bootlaces. West winger Lewis Scott was the quickest to react taking the ball at speed to make his way to the posts untouched to take the score to 12-7 (right).

Park managed another try from a catch and drive with centre Ashley Smith eventually going over and then adding the conversion.

The restart produced more bad news for West with replacement Kay taking nasty blow to the eye as he went to take the kick – Jay Anderson coming on and going on to have a fine game in only his second time off the first team bench.

Undaunted, West then produced the try of the game. Max Tennant took the ball on the halfway line and outpaced two defenders before flatfooting full-back Toby Davison  (left)  to give Southern an easy conversion, and to take the score to an interesting looking 19 -14 with half-time looming. However, there was time for another catch and drive from Park as West conceded a penalty from the restart with the inevitable kick to the corner. The 26-14 lead was quickly increased after the break with a sweeping move up the left wing seeing No 8 James Black go over with Ashley Smith again adding an excellent conversion from out wide.

West continued to battle hard and scored a fine team try of their own as 18 year old full back Sam Knight grabbed his first try in league rugby (above) . The forwards had built up pressure on the left and when Park were penalised West skipper Ryan Painter took a quick tap to bring the backs into play with Knight making the extra man to go in at the comer to take the score to 33-19.

West continued to make a game of it, but any hopes were quashed on the hour when West made a hash of their own line-out on the 22. Park seizing the opportunity to move the ball out to the left where back row Jake Smith scored his side’s sixth try of the afternoon with another conversion our wide from Ashley Smith

Park’s efficient try-scoring machine continued against a tiring and stretched West defence with tries from Ross Young and Jake Smith.

However, the visitors did get the final score of the day and a deserved bonus point. Ollie Connolly led a break up the right which saw Painter spot prop Jack Angus making a great run from the edge of the 22 and he collected a sharp pass to force his way over to end the scoring.

With several experienced Stags players on show for the first team a very youthful second team came up against a strong Bishop Auckland outfit at Brinkburn and going down 80-0.
