It began as early as the third minute. After a confident start a poor pass in midfield bounced into the hands of centre Brandon Asher-Wood who was able to race in from 45 metres with Matthew Grimes slotting an easy conversion.

Consett , coached by former West winger Grant Thompson, quickly increased their lead with a well worked move down the right which saw full-back Jack O’Leary going in at the corner.

Grimes missed the conversion and a penalty before West worked their way back into the game.Will Hildicth was  tackled into touch in the corner and then a pass from Painter to send Lewis Scott away was judged to be forward

In the next attack Painter looked to be in with a chance of going over from ten metres,  but when he was stopped his looping pass to Heckles was intercepted and Consett were able to force their way down the field with Grinmes eventaully giving his side a 15-0 lead on the half hour with a successful penalty.

West finally got on the scoreboard when Lewis Scott was first to a chip through from skipper Ryan Painter (right). It was just too wide for Davy Heckles’ conversion attempt. However, West kept up the pressure and scored again on the stroke of half-time. Will Hilditch started the move wide on the left coming inside to bring the centres into play and he was there in support to collect and go over with Heckles converting to take the score to 15-12 at the break. Heckles then levelled the scores with a penalty four minutes after the restart and if anything, West were looking the more likely to take the lead. But, just like the previous away defeat at Upper Eden, the home side were allowed to gain the upper hand in the final 20 minutes.

Grimes added another penalty with the ball just going over after hitting the top of a post then Consett scored the try of the day. The ball was moved swiftly across the backs for right winger Daniel Patchcott to evade despairing tackles from Sam Knight and Lewis Scott to squeeze in at the corner with Grimes’ conversion attempt scuttling across the ground.

The Consett second row then made up for it with an excellent conversion from the left touchline after winger Jake Barry marked his arrival from Chicago with a touchdown in the comer.

At 30-15 the game was effectively over but West continued to throw caution to the wind as they looked to get back in the game. However, another interception allowed Consett to break with Patchcott in support to go over with another excellent conversion from Grimes.

Insult was added to injury in the final minute when a West attack in the home 22 saw Chris Atkins’ pass again intercepted this time by Grimes who was able to race all the way to the posts to give himself an easy final kick.

After four games played West now find themselves in the bottom three and learning a hard lesson in how not to gift the opposition tries.
