Ryton will now be the opposition at Brinkburn as we get our first chance to look at the new tackle height laws in action ...

Acklam were due to provide the first opposition of the season but had to withdraw because of work and wedding commitments.

Ryton found themselves in a similar situation after North Shields were unable to field a side.  They will now travel down from Barmoor for a 2.00 kick off (the England v Wales game is on TV kicking off at 5.30) with both clubs aiming to give plenty of lads a leg stretch.

The visitors won Durham and Northumberland 2 at a canter last season - losing only one game. They have strengthened the squad to play in D&N 1 with a couple of new signings in the shape of former Falcons Academy forard Ewan Brown and ex- Blaydon and Ponteland back Owen Reed.

Won 19-10. Good workout for both sides with lots of lads getting game time. Max scored two trademark tries.

Excellent pre season game today against a big and organised Ryton side (as you would expect being coached by Falcons/England Mark Wilson, a proper mush). 25 senior players turned out and gave a good account of themselves, showing the work they've been putting in pre season, the young lads showing up particularly well, Matty Borthwick and Harry Siddle on debut 👏. With 16+ players to be back involved due to unavailability...the season looks to be a promising one. Great start lads👌
