For once it was West who got the first score on the board. Acklam dropping the ball on half-way almost from the kick-off with Sam Heron collecting to race up the right wing. He was tackled just short but had Issac Robinson in support and the flanker got his side off to the best possible start.

Undaunted, Acklam began to throw the ball about but settled for a successful penalty kick at goal as West defended. However, West went further ahead on their next attack with a trademark try from top scorer Max Tennant. Quick ball through the backs gave him space on wide on the half-way line and he outpaced two defenders before cutting inside the full back to score between the posts (right). Only ten minutes gone and West were 12-3 up and two tries to the good. Any thoughts that the floodgates were about to open were dispelled as Acklam began to gain more possession and got their reward when a high tackle by Jay Corbett was penalised. The kick to the corner leading to a successful drive from the forwards and a conversion for fly-half Dan Ashton. |

Worse was to come for West as Acklam continued their pressure to take a three point lead - massive space was created for left winger Brad Gater to dive over to make it 15-12 to the visitors.
That was to remain the score for the next 25 minutes as both sides tried to be adventurous only for handling errors to thwart their scoring ambitions.
West's pack was getting on top in the set-piece with referee Simon Williams penalising the visotors on a number of occasions. Instead of a shot at the posts West opted for kicks to the corner where handling errors were to cost them the opportunities.
When the kick at goal option was taken - right on half-time - Sam Heron's attempt to bring the scores level from in front of the posts saw his kick rebound off a post.
However, the break allowed the coaches to have a few words of advice and it paid off just two minutes into the half. Patient work from the restsart saw West gain territory, and when Acklam were penalised the kick to the corner finally brought the desired result - Jay Corbett crashing over with Heron's conversion wide.
The home supporters couldn't breathe more easily for long. A spirited Acklam again came back with their pacy backs making progress up the left wing and, when a grubber kick was put in from the 22, full back PJ Fincken-Hayes was onto it to give his side a 20-17 lead.
West's response was once again almost immediate with Jay Corbett getting his second try from another catch and drive with Heron adding the extras.
The home side were then dealt a blow when right winger Will Hilditch was yellow-carded for a deliberate knock on - but it didn't stop them from getting a fifth try.

Skipper Ryan Painter threw out a long pass which gave Max Tennant the opportunity to go for the corner. He was well tackled just short of the flag but Painter had sprinted in support to collect the inside pass - much to the despair of the Acklam defender (above). Heron again finding a post in his way as he went for the extra two points.
West were now more than a score clear. With an Acklam second row now also in the bin they set about securing the points against a tiring Acklam who were repeatedly being penalised both at the scrum and line-out.

However, West had to wait until the 70th minute for their next score, which came after Jay Corbett had to be helped off with a leg injury. The hard-working Chris Atkins got the try (left) as he proved impossible to stop from ten metres. It set up the opportunity for Heron to once again to show his talent in being able to hit a post. Replacement Lewis Scott then finished the scoring. A Davy Heckles break giving Heron the opportunity to time his pass to provide Scott with the opportunity to sidestep a defender for a smart finish in the corner. Almost inevitably Heron saved his best kick for last as he converted from the right touchline. |
The win was West's last home league game. They now face two final away games at Darlington and Novocastrians in their quest to remain unbeaten in the league.
