West had looked comfortable, if never dominant, throughout the game. However, failure to take chances allowed an increasingly confident Medicals to grow into the game.

For once West started strongly with a Matt Siddle kick snapped up by a lively Max Tennant. His inside ball found Davy Heckles who sent Isaac Robinson charging for the line, but he was held up by two desperate tacklers.

Tennant was immediately back in the action - creating space for Sam Heron who was stopped by a high tackle. The kick to the corner might have produced a result but West were penalised for holding .

 Medicals had withstood the early flurry and on their first attack Jay Corbett was yellow carded for a no-arms tackle. They attacked up the left wing and when Alex Barker was penalised they used the line-out to force their way to take a 5-0 lead.

Not to be outdone 14-man West again found the corner with a penalty kick, and this time  Adam Coates celebrated his 250th first team game by galloping  over from one meter(above).

Heron's kick from wide was true and with Corbett back West kept up the pressure.

It was an afternoon of held-up try attempts for both sides. Barker became the second West player to have his ambitions thwarted before Man of the Match Sam Heron scored the  try of the day.

He collected inside his own half and had most of the Medicals team in front of him. Undaunted, he set off on a run where he fended off some and dodged others as he made it all the way to the line (pictured). His conversion giving his side a healthy 14-5 lead.

That was stretched to 21-5 when Will Hilditch scored from a similar range. However, his was more of a straightforward sprint after intercepting on his right wing and racing all the way to the posts.  It was one of  those interceptions which was either a yellow card for a knock-on or a try as Will stretched for the ball. Fortunately, he had the skill to knock the ball up rather than  forward.

Medicals weren't in a mood to give up with their strong running centres creating problems, and back row Joshua McAuley giving Jake Linighan competition in the line-outs.

They looked to have scored their second try after centre Tom Johnson collected Matt Siddle's chip - promptly bulldozing his way through the West defence. The attack was stopped, courtesy of a high tackle, and from the penalty Medicals did force their way over - it was their turn to be held-up.

They were not to be denied with prop Richard Clegg forcing his way over right on half-time to take the score to 21-12.

The home side had the breeze, and the slope, in their favour after the break, and quickly reduced the lead to just six points with a penalty as West were offside in their own 22.

There then  followed a big let-off for West as strong running right winger Ollie Mann  for once managed to evade Max Tennant. With centre Marcus Brookes on his inside he drew full back Lewis Scott , however the centre couldn't take the inside ball knocking it on with the llne at his mercy.

That galvanised West and a superb long range kick from Matt Siddle was shepherded into touch near  the corner by Medicals winger Robbie Armstrong - who had obviously forgotten the new 50-22 law.

West's throw-in  won good ball with Hilditch coming off his wing to break the defensive line. He sent in the hard-working Isaac Robinson for a thoroughly deserved  try for him and a bonus point for his team. Heron's kick taking the score to 28-15.

West kept up the pressure with a series of breaks up the right wing. Siddle started the first with Corbett taking the ball on before releasing Alex Barker who was stopped just short of the line and then  penalised for holding on.

Minutes later it was Robertson and Hutchinson going up the same wing in some style, but again the lack of support at the breakdown meant the home side got the penalty.

Back came Medicals to score under the posts and to make the game somewhat interesting in the final minutes, and following a long break as winger Robbie Armstrong was treated for an ankle injury.

Jay Corbett also had to limp off with Charlie Kay coming into the back row and Alex Barker taking over at No 8. He put hearts in mouth as he knocked on at the base of the scrum as West looked to get out of their 22. However, Medicals were pinged for holding on as they used their scrum ball to attack through their backs.

For once there wasn't to be a last minute score. Phew.
