The result puts West on top of Counties 1 D&N by virtue of points difference. Rovers are also on 10 points  and next week's visitors Hartlepool (Old Boys) in fourth place. Interesting times when it comes to local bragging rights.

The Stags completed the double against Guis - winning 24-0 at Brinkburn in a CaNDY league game, which saw a return to action of props Adam Coates and Liam Pennick.

A senior squad can never have enough props as the First team showed at Guisborough - Adam Hutchinson was a late cry off, as he was poorly, with Craig Hadwen drafted from the Stags to provide cover from the bench. Last season that might have caused a problem.

The hosts were celebrating their first home game following promotion last season as winners of D&N2, and they started well with the slope in their favour. One big tackle saw Jay Corbett and Ollie Connolly having to leave the field after they clashed heads - Ollie's wound taking longer to stop bleeding.

Strong running and good support play kept Guis in the West half and they deservedly went ahead after 12 minutes. The score from close range came courtesy of flanker Alf Jacobs to set up an easy conversion.

Galvanised into action West forced their way uphill and another big tackle in midfield from Davy Heckles saw the ball go loose with Will Hilditch, back on top form, seizing on the opportunity. He raced in from the 22 with Sam Heron putting the scores level.

Six minutes later the winger was again in action - this time after a slick backs move which gave him the space to dive over in the corner (above) with Sam's kick drifting narrowly wide.

It was one of the few flowing moves in a half dominated by penalties at the breakdown. Time was of the essence in releasing the ball or the tackled player -  the Ref was consistent.

And so we had to wait until the end of the half for what would be an important score. It went to West as Alex Barker put in a tackle just inside the Guisborough half with the ball once again going loose. It was hacked on with Lewis Scott scampering in pursuit to touchdown to give his side a 17-7 lead at the break.

Confidence was up with the slope in the visitor's favour, and the bonus point try duly arrived - albeit in slightly bizarre fashion.

Sam Heron, always willing to try something different, sent in a speculative drop goal attempt from some 45 metres. It was high, but short and to the left. Instead of admiring  his bold attempt Sam had set off in hot pursuit and was rewarded when the ball bounced back towards him - wrong footing two defenders. He kicked on to score and then add the conversion.

At 24-7 West were now in a comfort zone - helped by a yellow card for back row Luke Berry for a high tackle. That prompted a bit of family history for the Corbetts with the brothers scoring almost identical close range tries.

Jay was first up (above) followed by 22 year old Will ten minutes later, while Jack Angus was in the bin. It was the second row's first try in league rugby and a sign of his growing confidence in the role.  The conversions taking the score to 36-7.

The final stages were played out with both teams down to 14 - Alex Barker for a high tackle and Guisborough's No 8 Ben Buckworth for a late one on Matt Siddle,  who went on to be  nominated West Man of the Match by the home team.

Guisborough continued to pose problems with their strong running, and it was credit to the West defence that the home side was  unable to add to their score.

Instead, it was the livewire hooker Aidan Jackson-Smith, he wouldn't look out of place as a flanker, who touched down wide on the right after a concerted attack on the home line after Jake Linighan went close. Another excellent Heron conversion taking the score to 43-7.

The half century came up courtesy of the hard-working Chris Atkins from a catch and drive.

There was time for Guisborough to mount a final attack up the left with skipper Painter judged to have tripped the Guisborough winger as he chased a kick. We are accustomed to West conceding  a try with the very last play of the game, but this time the attack was repelled. Times are indeed changing.

Next week it's Old Boys at home. The Stags kick off against them at 1.00 followed by the First XV's at 3.00 and it's also Ladies Day. Come early.
