HEAD GREENKEEPERS REPORT
Barry Walker
JULY 2012
Greens
Wet conditions have severely affected the maintenance programme on the greens. No dressing was applied last month. Ironing has been kept to a minimum due to the problems of capping the surface (saturated sub-structure) and impeding drainage. We have been able to carry out poa busting and a couple of scarifying passes to assist in thatch removal. Overall, very wet conditions dictate maintenance and playability (mostly speed). There is some disease on the greens but at this time of year it will grow out. We will be applying an iron to help the plant thicken up its cell walls to assist disease resistance.
Tees
We will apply a fertiliser this month and continue with the maintenance programme.
Fairways
Due to the wet conditions we have added a third weekly cut to improve presentation and playability.
Bunkers
We are continuing to work very hard during this wet period on the playability of the bunkers.
General Comments
This month we will be addressing as many worn areas around the course as is possible using soil and seed.
We have started preparing a winter green on the 6th hole in preparation for necessary winter work to be carried out on this area.
