NATIONWIDE ANNOUNCE £1 MILLION PARTNERSHIP WITH DISABILITY SPORT EVENTS

Date issued: 23 November 2005

Nationwide Building Society last night announced that it is to become the main sponsor of Disability Sport Events in a deal worth £1 million over the next seven years. This news comes after five years of partnership between the two organisations and will help DSE to increase participation from regional to international level in both swimming and athletics. It will help with talent identification and team selection in the run-up to the Paralympics in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012.

The sponsorship deal will be launched in March 2006 at the DSE National Junior Swimming Championships in Sheffield, but the announcement was made last night at the Nationwide Junior Sports Awards 2005 in Lancashire Cricket Club.  The project funding for seven years will be used to:

·       pay for DSE regional swimming and athletics in all of the Home Countries;

·       help fund the annual DSE National and Open Championships in swimming and athletics;

·       pay for a new Officer post at the DSE Head Office;

·       fund the well-established annual Nationwide Junior Sports Awards.

Nationwide, which has been involved with the DSE for five years, sees this as the ideal opportunity to put something extra into DSE events, to help at the grassroots level and, hopefully, to produce international champions of the future.

Commenting on the sponsorship, Philip Williamson, chief executive of Nationwide Building Society, said: “Nationwide Building Society is proud to be associated with, and support the work of, DSE. We like to think that our relationship with DSE has been a great example of how organisations can make a difference and we are delighted to be able to expand on our support. In partnership, we want to assist DSE with encouraging participation in sport. This means giving support where the champions start their road to success - at the grass roots level - and beyond.  We hope that our sponsorship will be the starting block for all young people in disability sport who dream of success.”

Gordon Neale OBE, director of events at DSE, comments: “These sort of partnerships do not come along that often in disability sport, but with Nationwide, we have not only found an organisation that works tirelessly to support us, but also an organisation that wants to do more than just give funding. We are proud of Nationwide for helping us to do more for disability sport in this country, where it is needed most. Our events are essential for disabled people and the one million pounds is quite overwhelming and an excellent way to start the Awards evening.”

Following the announcement, young stars from Swimming, Athletics and Mini Games were awarded with their Nationwide bursaries. These bursaries have been awarded during the year to help younger athletes continue in their chosen sports and encourage them to develop their talents.

The evening held at Lancashire Cricket Club from 7-10pm, welcomed guests who have supported the DSE programme for the past year. Sarah Bailey MBE and

Matthew Walker joined John Amaechi, Danny Mills and Uriah Rennie to thank sponsors, dignitaries, competitors and volunteers for another great year in disability sport, and toasted a bright future for tomorrow’s champions.
