We only really built any solid attacks in the first five minutes and the last five minutes but it was enough.
The home side had several players returning from long term injury while we were missing a handful of our own regulars. In stepped Michael Hogan and Ross Wood in the front row and Craig Gilmour at No 8.
Against a home side low in confidence we made the best possible start. Andrew Cheslin attacked up the left wing after just four minutes and when was stopped on the home 22 Andrew Foreman fed Gareth Eddy who barged his way to the line shrugging off three tackles.
Stu Waites, returning at full back in place of the injured Colin Cheslin, added the two points and we looked set for an easy afternoon.
Beverley had other ideas. They were fortunate to get a penalty when Dan Boatman went to intercept a Tiola pass. He used both hands in knocking on but Referee Graham Dickens ruled it had been deliberate. Phil Duboulay scored the penalty.
Beverley continued to enjoy the possession and Gareth Eddy was sin-binned for holding onto the tackler. He was quickly followed into the bin by home skipper Junior Tupai for a punch on Andrew Foreman.
West enjoyed a rare spell in the Beverley 22 after a right wing break by Scott Butcher. Greg Edwards was in support and his deft kick towards the post set up a chase for Gareth Foreman but home full back Johnson was there first.
Beverley did finally get another score deserved when Duboulay slotted a penalty on the half hour to make it 6-7.
We had the wind in the second half but the pattern of play didn’t change much. Beverley almost managed a try when right winger Nightingale was given a run at the corner but Liam Bailey was there to put in a tremendous tackle.
The home side had two similar attempts thwarted in the left corner. They did score a penalty from the 22 to give themselves a two point lead but began to run out of steam as we built up our first concerted pressure of the game.
It paid off on 68 minutes when Beverley were penalised for coming in at the side and Waites stepped up to send his 30 metre penalty straight between the posts to regain the lead.
The home side’s heads went further down on 72 minutes when their powerful No 8 Dave Worrall was red carded for a punch on Chocky.
Our late pressure threatened another try but we were happy to settle for another Waites penalty right on the final whistle. T
